Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back Scuttlebutt

The battle of good vs. evil has always been a timely and significant source of entertainment and drama. Two of the most popular franchises in movie history (Star Wars and Harry Potter) both create compelling and fascinating stories that have captivated audiences around the world.

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 are both very dark films. They both offer a bleak glimpse into our hero’s journey and really confront the fact that they’re clearly in over their heads. In both films, the antagonist is more powerful than ever and poses a serious threat to our antagonists. There’s also a rather large build up to the inevitable showdown between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader and Harry Potter and Voldemort in these films. While Luke does ultimately face off against Vader in Empire and we don’t necessarily see that happen in Hallows, it’s completely sure to happen in Part 2. The aspect I like the most between these two is the fact that it ends on a down note. In Deathly Hallows, spoiler alert Dobby dies and Voldemort finds one of the most powerful wands created to face off against Harry. In The Empire Strikes Back, spoiler alert??? Han Solo is captured and Luke is, indeed, Darth Vaders’ son. Did I just ruin that?

I love that both these films delve into the darkness after their not-as-intense predecessors came and went. Not to say that the first few Harry Potter’s and Star Wars were cookie cutter kids stuff, but it takes some serious guts to end a movie on a downer (even though deep down we know Harry and Luke are going to kick ass in the end). Empire is a classic and I know that somewhere along the line Hallows will be, too (or at least deserves to) because as of right now, these two are the best of the series by far.
